Painting en plein air (in the open air) allows me to leave my confined interior studio space for the living world outside. The majority of my paintings are alla prima (one sitting), which impart a fresh quality and a sense of immediacy. Since the light changes quickly outdoors I must simplify what I observe to capture the feeling and essence of my subject. I enjoy conveying light, atmosphere, and mood rather than a defined literal copy.
The sensuality of manipulating color with soft pastels or oils imbues my artwork with intimacy I wish to convey to the viewer. Among my favorite activities are people-watching and figurative painting. I particularly enjoy the capture of a person or persons engaged in slice-of-life activities. The pieces I am exhibiting depict some of those intimate moments, and complete the connection from my hand to the viewers perspective.
